Modmath 4.0 is a web-based application that runs in modern browsers on a wide range of devices. This article lists what works best and what to be aware of.
Recommended Browsers
| Browser | Support |
|---|---|
| Google Chrome | Fully supported — recommended |
| Microsoft Edge | Fully supported |
| Firefox | Supported |
| Safari (macOS / iOS) | Supported with caveats (see below) |
| Samsung Internet | Supported |
We recommend Google Chrome for the most consistent experience across all features.
Safari Notes
Safari has stricter handling of cookies and cross-site requests than other browsers. In most cases Modmath works normally in Safari, but you may encounter:
- Sign-in issues — If you are redirected back to the sign-in page after signing in, try Chrome.
- Storage behavior — Safari aggressively clears site storage when the browser is closed. Save your work as a .modmath file regularly if you use Safari.
If you run into problems in Safari, switching to Chrome usually resolves them.
Supported Devices
| Device | Support |
|---|---|
| Mac (laptop/desktop) | Fully supported |
| Windows PC | Fully supported |
| iPad | Fully supported |
| Android tablet | Fully supported |
| iPhone | Supported (limited screen space) |
| Android phone | Supported (limited screen space) |
| Chromebook | Fully supported |
Modmath is designed for tablet and desktop use. On small phone screens, the canvas and keyboard are usable but cramped — a tablet or computer gives a much better experience.
Browser Feature Requirements
Modmath uses these modern browser capabilities:
- WebGL — Required for the canvas. Enabled by default in all modern browsers. If WebGL is disabled by IT policy, the canvas will not load.
- Cookies — Required for sign-in and sessions.
- Local file system storage (OPFS) — Used to save workbooks locally. Supported in Chrome 105+, Edge 105+, Safari 15.2+, and Firefox 111+.
- Camera API — Required for the camera import feature. Prompted when first used.
Minimum Browser Versions
We support the current version and the two previous major versions of each supported browser. Very old browsers (e.g. Chrome 80 or Safari 14) may experience issues. Update to the latest version if you encounter problems.
Not Supported
- Internet Explorer (any version)
- Browsers with JavaScript disabled
