This article covers the most recent features and improvements added to Modmath 4.0.
Long Division
Modmath now has a dedicated long division symbol (⟌) on the ADV1 keypad tab. When you place ⟌ in a cell, a vinculum (the horizontal line above the dividend) draws automatically and extends as you fill in the digits to the right.
See Long Division in Modmath for a full guide.
Automatic Equation Lines
When you write a vertical arithmetic problem — addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division — Modmath automatically draws a horizontal line below the last row of the expression. The line extends to match the width of your problem, and updates live as you add or remove digits.
See Automatic Equation Lines for details.
New Keyboard Layout with Undo and Redo
The virtual keypad has been redesigned with a cleaner layout and expanded symbol coverage across three tabs — ADV1, ADV2, and ADV3.
New in this update:
- UNDO and REDO buttons are now always visible in the keyboard toolbar, whether the keyboard is collapsed or expanded.
- Operator keys are visually aligned for better readability.
See Typing Math — Using the Keypad for the full symbol reference.
Import Assignments
The toolbar now has an Import submenu with three options for bringing content into your canvas:
- File Library — Open a file from your device
- Camera — Take a photo of a printed worksheet
- Google Drive — Select a file from Google Drive
See Importing Assignments for details.
New Native Modmath File
The new .mm format preserves all workbook content — cells, annotations, images, notes, and layout.
From the workbook toolbar:
- Click the ⋮ (More options) icon and select Save.
- A .modmath file is downloaded to your device.
From the dashboard:
- Find your workbook and click the ⋮ (More options) icon.
- Select Save. A .mm file is saved to your Downloads folder.
Opening a .mm file:
- From the dashboard, select Open From->Local files.
- Choose a .mm file to open.
- The workbook opens and can be edited
Improved Erase Tools
The erase tools have their own icons now. Selecting one or multiple cells and clicking Erase now clears them all at once with live updates to equation lines and the vinculum. Use the Erase Drawing tool
to erase drawings, graphs and lines.
Draw Custom Shapes Tool
Use the Draw Custom Shapes tool to create freehand drawings, lines, or graphs directly in your workspace. Works with a mouse, finger, or stylus.
New Text Box Tool
Instead of the Notes tool, Modmath 4.0 now has a new text tool. Use the Add Text tool to add text anywhere on the canvas. Resize it by dragging the corners, and move it by dragging it to a new position. Click any existing text box to edit it.
Optimized Equation Tools
Several new tools are available to help build and annotate equations:
- Borrow/Carry — Click a cell to toggle a borrow or carry mark in the upper-left corner. Type to enter a carry digit. Cannot be used in the same cell as fractions or exponents.
- Fraction — Click a cell to split it into a numerator and denominator, ready for input.
- Exponent — Adds a raised superscript exponent to the right of the base number.
- Negative — Applies a negative sign to a cell for signed number work.
- Variable — Marks a cell as a placeholder for unknown values (e.g., x, y).
- See Toolbar Annotation Modes in Modmath 4.0 for details.
New In-App Accessibility Features
Modmath now has a few native accessibility features. To see these features click Account (icon in the upper right)->Settings->Accessibility. These include:
- Keypad size - increase the size of the keypad
- Darken grid lines - darken and increase the contrast of the grid lines
Admin Portal Updates
Enterprise administrators have access to an updated billing section in the Admin Portal, including:
- Add seats with selectable term lengths and pay-now or invoice options
- Remove seats from renewal
- Downloadable invoice history
See the Modmath Enterprise Admin Portal Guide for the full walkthrough.
