The Modmath toolbar includes several specialized modes for annotating and structuring math problems. These tools go beyond basic equations to help students and teachers write more advanced equations.
Switching Modes
Click any mode icon in the toolbar to activate it. The active mode will be highlighted. Click it again or select a different mode to switch. Hover your cursor over any of the icons to see what the tool is.
Available Modes
Add Equations (Default) 
The standard input mode. Click a cell and use the virtual keypad to type numbers, operators, and symbols.
Draw Custom Shapes 
Freehand draw, draw lines, or draw graphs. Draw with your mouse, finger, or stylus.
Add Text 
Click the canvas to add text. Adjust size using corners and drag to move. Click existing texts to edit. See How Do I Create and Edit Text on the Canvas in Modmath 4.0? For more details.
Erase Drawings 
Drag finger/ cursor over drawing to erase straight lines, drawn shapes, or graphs.
Erase Cells 
Click cells to clear their contents, or drag-select multiple cells and click Erase to clear them all at once. See Using the Eraser Tool in Modmath 4.0 for details.
Borrow / Carry 
Used for multi-digit addition and subtraction. Click a cell to toggle a small borrow or carry mark in the upper-left corner of that cell. Click again to remove it. You can enter a carry digit into the mark using the keyboard. Borrow/carry marks cannot be combined with fractions or exponents in the same cell.
Fraction 
In Fraction mode, click a cell to place a fraction template. The cell splits into a numerator and denominator, ready for input.
Exponent 
Activates an exponent template for the selected cell — the exponent appears as a raised superscript to the right of the base number.
Negative 
Applies a negative sign treatment to a cell, useful for signed number work.
Variable 
Marks a cell as a variable placeholder. Use this to indicate unknown values (ex: x, y, etc.) in equations or to label parts of a problem.
Highlight 
Click cells to toggle a highlight (yellow) on or off. Useful for marking cells of interest — steps, answers, or cells to review.
Selection 
Click or drag to select one or more cells. Move selected cells by dragging them to a new position on the canvas. See How Do I Manage Objects on the Canvas in Modmath 4.0? for details.
Select Imports 
Manage imported images — move, resize, rotate, duplicate, send to back, or crop photos placed on the canvas.
Import Assignments 
Import a file, photo, or Google Drive document onto the canvas. See Importing Assignments in Modmath 4.0 for details.
