Long Division in Modmath 4.0

Modmath includes a dedicated long division symbol that automatically draws a division bracket and the horizontal line (vinculum) above the dividend. This lets you set up long division problems the way they appear on paper.

 

Adding the Long Division Symbol

1. Tap a cell on the canvas to open the keyboard.
2. Select the ADV1 tab.
3. Tap the ⟌ symbol (second row).

The symbol appears in the selected cell. A short vinculum (horizontal line) appears automatically above the cell to the right, ready for you to enter the dividend.

 

Entering the Dividend

Tap each cell to the right of ⟌ and type your digits. The vinculum extends automatically as you fill in each cell, always spanning the full length of the dividend.

Example:

 3 ⟌ 9 4 2

Type 3 in the divisor cell, place ⟌ in the next cell, then type 9, 4, 2 in the cells to the right. The vinculum draws itself across all three dividend cells.

 

Working Through the Problem

Use the rows below the dividend to show your work — quotient above, partial products and remainders below — just like a written long division problem. Modmath does not calculate the answer automatically; the layout is for showing your work step by step.

 

Tips

• The vinculum updates live as you add or remove cells to the right of ⟌.
• If you erase the ⟌ cell, the vinculum disappears.
• Use the negative sign key to handle remainders or negative results.
• Drag cells to reposition the entire problem if you need more space.
